Steam's Jukebox Shuffle - Strange and Exotic Melodies

 

About a year ago I put a mix titled Strange & Exotic Melody which was part of a series called Steam's Jukebox Shuffle... well that mix helped to get me my own monthly show Steam's Jukebox Shuffle on radiocore.net which I'm loving, so thank you all!

 

Anyhow, I've now developed that mix into one of my shows, and it's been one of my most popular so far (and my own personal favourite), so I though it would be nice to share it with you guys and make it available for download here. If your familiar with the original mix, this one has some of the same tunes, but also loads of different stuff too! Hope you dig it!

 

I've had to split the show into two parts, and I've added the tracklist below.

Jack Fetterman has provided his DJ set from the Tiki News Bon Voyage Kahiki! party, August 26, 2000. this is the second edition 2009 , which differs in that it includes corrections and the bonus track, Acapulco 2000.

In a previous post I asked you for surviving Bellybongo-compilations and I am glad to announce that finally one has surfaced! Apparently it's from 2005. Magnus Bellybongo Sandberg himself wrote about it:

I encoded all tracks at best possible options, if you unlike me is allergic to background noise, feel free to experiment and recieve a cleaner sound.

Belly Bongo Exotic Compilation 7

Back in those days, we considered 128 kbps the ultimate mp3-standard. Most sharities were posted online in that format. Speaking of "sharity". I believe it was Magnus Bellybongo who introduced this word. I downloaded a lot of his exotic album-rips and exotic they were! He also made compilations and unfortunately this is the only one I can find back in my archives... It was also incomplete, because in that period I had a phone-in-connection and downloads where often interupted. From the bellybongo page I saved with it I deduced what the missing number 14 should be, found it on youtube and ripped it.
As this is "exotic compilation 7" there should be at least 6 others (or did Magnus mean "exotic 7 INCHES). If anyone happens to have (some of) the others, or know more, or if you are Mr. Magnus Bellybongo himself, please leave a comment.

Exotic Trilogy Vol. 1

This Is Irritainment!
Irritainment is a delicate balancing act. The trick is to take an intrinsically annoying concept and make it entertaining. Too much annoyance and the whole mixture falls apart. Few have ever had the skill to master this shadow realm of entertainment. WFMU, the Church of the Subgenius and the collective known as KBZ (or KB Zed).

The Exotic Trilogy project is a concept anyone who has ever made tape collections will know all too well. Search through any decent size records collection and you'll discover countless versions of various standards. KBZ has zeroed in on three of the touchstones of the exotic genre - "Quiet Village", "Caravan" and "Taboo" - and assembled two colections of various covers. To add to the entertainment value, these compilations work in a sort of tape loop style alternating the three songs over and over for seven total loops.

What proves KBZ's mastery of the fine art of irritainment is the fact neither collection truly annoys. Instead, the listener is presented with seven cycles of the exotic trilogy, each perhaps progressively stranger, perhaps not. The difference between each version can be quite remarkable, and can only truly be experienced if you program your CD player to only play the tracks of one specific tune. Taken as a whole, however, these two volumes serve more as an type of muzak - a repeating program that hits you on an almost subliminal level.

According to the liner notes for Volume Two, KBZ plans five more volumes in this series. One can wish desperately for the day when the five CD changer can be loaded with five Exotic Trilogys for an entire day's worth of delightful irritainment!

Arabica 4

Frits Jonker's fourth Arabica compilation. He mentions it on his blog april 18, 2013 where you can also find several versions of the artwork (included in the second zipfile).  A handfull of songs were included in other mixtapes by Frits. Three deliberately and four by accident. But sometimes a song belongs just where it belongs. Although Frits himself doesn´t think highly of this particular compilation, I enjoyed it very much, more than once!

Nether-Arabica

In his own blogpost, december 3th, 2013 about it Frits Jonker writes this was a very difficult compilation to make: Dutch language songs about the Arabic world. They are hard to find and when you do they turn out to be silly and full of clichés both musically and lyrically. But I think that's what makes this mix so fun to listen to.

Passage To Paradise

At both music forums we like to talk about a variety of music. If you hit Martin Denny, Les Baxter and Esquivel you're going to be game for most stuff.

My take on Exotica is about one type of music blending with another? Martin Denny, a jazz piano player, moves to Hawaii for gigs. Before you know it he's adding Eastern and Polynesian instruments, and by accident frog and bird calls. The story is not too different from Jazz musicians in NYC being influenced by the Cubans around the corner.
