Everyone wants to be a DJ

Something about the people in this group! Everyone wants to be a DJ. What are your options?

  • Community Radio Station.

If you have a local Community station show up! Check out the web site. Every station is different. The typical formula is stop in. Apply for a show. Pay your dues. Sweep the floors, take out the trash, check in CD's. Train with another DJ. When a slot opens up or they need a sub you will be ready. At WVRK in Poughkeepsie NY they even have a apply for a show page! . We have breathen at WVRK, working the board Friday's 6-7PM. "Bachelor Pad at Colony 3". What a lovely name for a program.

At FreeForm Portland  the front page asks" Interested in becoming a DJ?" Freeform Portland changes the schedule every 6 months. Anyone interested in having a show in the new cycle needs to apply. Including current DJs!

  • College Radio

Do some research on the policies, every station in this area is a little different. Check the website. Is it all student run? Are advisors and full time paid staff involved? Policies are based on how much autonomy the student body has. If you strike out with the students, email or call the community DJ's who usually have programs in the mornings or weekends when students typically don't DJ. You may find veteran DJ who can advise or sponsor you.

  • On the Internet

The ExoticaRing  is made of of people who are or have been DJ's. Some of us work professionally in some capacity in broadcasting, some DJ in clubs. Currently Georgy does LoriHajiTura and Steam Stock has JukeBox Shuffle on MixCloud.

How do you get started?

Don Fisher of The Tiki Lounge mentioned on Facebook that "he uses a Shure SM7B Microphone through a small Behringer mixer with Magix Audio & Music Lab Premium software which now provides 4 track mixing. I run my turntable through the Behringer as well." And "can honestly say that it takes a considerable amount of time if you're truly dedicated and conscientious"

But as a starter project, scratch that itch, start with a cheaper microphone, forget the mixer, and use free Audacity.

Find mentors. Someone to call as you ramp up the learning curve on the technology.

Conclusion:

There is a place for music programs our friends have on the radio.  In between the jazz, world, folk, blues segments you typically find on your eclectic not for profit station.

If you like programs like this encourage your local public radio station to investigate the possibility of putting one together. Maybe you can. Based on the response received when on college radio firmly convinced there is. In every market.  We have got a dozen of DJ's represented on the Facebook group with enthusiastic listeners. We are poking up to 5600 members.  So what do those numbers tell us?

If anything the Retro Cocktail Hour is a textbook example.

Check the Cool Wax Vol 1

Ten year old compilation from an inactive blogger named  brainwerk . Re-listening as I type this. This is the reason I stopped making my own mixtapes. Others are so much BETTER at it. A nice blend of favorites, rarities and the unusual. And the fantastic custom artwork.  Just realized Michael Buble sounds almost like Mel Torme, the diction and the phrasing....

Brainwerk's  blog Check the Cool Wax is still up on Google's Blogger.  Leave him a comment at the original blog post.

So we reluctantly removed the Whipped Cream Girl from the masthead of our Facebook Group. We really needed to graphically coalesce our original mailing list, the FaceBook page and this website. Visit, play, post at whatever social media site you want.

This was a great way to  feature her again. Our Whipped Cream Girl really is our patron saint of crate digging. Because every time we dig, there she is, a Siren making us crash against the rocks, "keep flipping. the next one is the one your looking for".

From July 31, 2006: Here it is. Check The Cool Wax Volume 1. There are three parts. Artwork and Part 1 & 2 of music files. It is made up of the favorite songs released on this site up to now.

Made in Italy

Love the Bossa Nova. I'm 1/2 Uruguayan and 1/2 Italian. So what side of me likes the Bossa Nova?

The tango was really born in the whorehouses of Montevideo Uruguay. You got to do something when your not busy. Why not keep dancing? The Argentinians STOLE the Tango and made it respectable. Remember what Cole Porter said:

In olden days, a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking.
But now, God knows,
Anything goes.

Remember the Waltz used to be considered shocking.

Back to the Bossa, Italians wish they could take credit for Bossa. Like Pizza, spaghetti and tomato sauce they had its origins elsewhere but are now so quintessential Italian. The Bossa is just so natural a sound and rhythm. A popular track on Joe Slezik's WICN program is Bossa Nova Roma by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. From "A Man and a Woman".

[audio mp3="http://exoticamusic.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/10.-Steve-and-Eydie-Bossa-Nova-Roma.mp3"][/audio]

See what I mean? And look at Steve and Eydie! So cute.

Not sure which blog I picked up this compilation of 20 Italian Nu Jaz and Bossa Groves from. Hope you come forward and take a bow. And thank you for your efforts. Nice artwork!

Time Of Desire

Georgina Ragazza has an informative article about Beat Films  at the Lorihajitura blog. Tune into her Mixcloud channel for a weekly two-hour music and chat show that features all the tunes and stories mentioned in each issue. Select episode 106 for the focus on the beat films.

Now was going to post a homemade comp found at the RangeRaver Departure Lounge blog. Researching found "Jazz of the Beat Generation" was a commercial compilation per Amazon! So until the Exotica Ring  group decides what to do about out of print compact disk compilations presenting this old rip of mine. RangeRaver. His blog is inactive, but in the ~ 300 posts he presented about 90 homemade compilations. So if your around mate consider re-blogging those efforts here yourself by joining as a contributor. Or let me gradually do it. Blogging is a cyclic event.

In the beat discography never heard about "Time of Desire". Its always about a few classics like "Beat Girl".  So wonder how many of out there? You have this one now.  Sparse dirty-bird word jazz stuff on the Hi-Fi Label.  The cover is beautiful.

Juan García Esquivel - Ames Brothers - Hello Amigos

How many vocalists did Juan García Esquivel ever work with? Met many of a cat who was into Jazz or Space Age pop who are just NOT into vocalists.

You know the type? Similar to  the total John Coltrane fan who rolls his eyes when you tell them your favorite is "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman"?

So going crate digging don't pass over the vocals, but check the arrangers.  It's the Space Age guys working with the vocalists that I appreciate. Warren Barker. Mort Garson, Marty Gold, Russ Garcia, Marty Manning worked with many. Esquivel here has to put on the brakes a little, its like a composer writing a violin concerto, tone it down so everyone can hear the soloists. Esquivel is right there on the piano and harpsichord. And its his distinctive arrangements.

Shorty Rogers - Meets Tarzan

Have not digitized an LP in thirteen years. Should get back into it someday.

If you never heard this before enjoy this lo-fi rip in the 200kbps. Jazz musicians are fantastic, and Shorty Rogers was fantastic. But this is one the jazz lovers tend to ignore? So even through the movie is billed now as a complete bomb. It gave Rogers and his pals the opportunity to RIP! Just goes on and on. Terminators all.

Decent artwork can be found on LP Cover Lover.

Le Compilation di Mondo Ribelle-Vol. 1 and 2

One of the bloggers that came and went was an Italian fellow who called himself "Caveman" .

Posted an an entire world of Italian pop. LP',  45's, from the late 60's and early 70's.  About 500 entries before he ran out of music or burned out!

Really so much to absorb. If your in the Exotica groups and like almost anything that is a problem! Too much to listen too. So that's why we appreciate the efforts of the compilers.

Sitar Dreams - Xtabay Compilation

Found another Xtabay comp on my drive.

Never get tired of Shocking Blue here by Acka Raga.

Certainly can enjoy Bollywood music and the sitar.  What makes these it Lounge-Exotica is cross-pollinating the instrument with  Western arrangements or covers.

Now GeorgyGirl has plenty to say about sitar music on her 103 LoriHajiTura Broadcast. And about Big Jim Sullivan.

"Blues for the Guru" is fun stuff. Like many others have digitized it from a 101 Strings LP. It's just too bad the sound quality sounds is kind of muffled. So know its not my my digitizing skills or the turntable.

It need to be re-recorded. Does anybody here know Keith Lockart at the Boston Pops?

Les and Larry Elgart - au Go-Go

Part of the appeal of record crate digging is finding items like this.

Les and Larry Elgart were the new guys coming up in the band era and would have continued in that vein. But the big bands were on the way out! Too expensive and changing tastes. So in the late 60's LP's like this and "The Sound of the Times" was an attempt to freshen the music up?

Heard the Elgart's on some classic swing programs. But not these "later" LP's.  Thunder Shake is practically a go-go anthem.  1965 according to Diskdogs. and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" was released on February 22, 1966 (wiki). So what gives? Looking for more  Go Go LP's to post here. If you got any.

01. Les and Larry Elgart - Thunder Shake
02. Les and Larry Elgart - Downtown
03. Les and Larry Elgart - Meditation
04. Les and Larry Elgart - Come Rain or Come Shine

Yé! Yé! Music: When France Went POP!

Our Exoticamusic contributor Georgina Ragazza posted essential reading on her Lorihajitura blog:
Yé! Yé! Music: When France Went POP!

GG's sentiments mirror my own. My first exposure 60's French was at the first incarnation of Luxuriamusic. Hearing France Gall's "Laisse Tomber Les Filles" and Serge Gainsbourg tunes was a revelation. And finding out that Serge Gainsbourg is sort of a fallen French Frank Sinatra perv? The country went in deep mourning for a few days in 1991 when he suddenly died of alcoholism? Not a peep here in the States!

As GG mentions on her blog When April March's cover of France Gall’s Laisse Tomber Les Filles was featured in commercials for Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof I was like YA! The American Philistines are finally going to discover French pop! Ya! Never happened, like going to the metric system.....

So this music will always here for somebody to "discover". It is the joy of discovery that drives folks who gravitate towards the Exotica music social media groups and listen to the wonderful DJ's who are stimulating our senses.

So another plug to our Georgina. Catch up on her  Lorihajitura podcasts on Mixcloud . All you have to do is supply the tea and biscuits. GG handles the rest.

This retreaded comp is an introduction picked up by someone in the know:

Eileen - Cettes Bottes Sont Fait Pour Marcher is "These Boot Are Made for Walking" sung in French. Jacquelin Taib - 7 Heures du matin suddently sings "Talkin' bout my generation" in few times in English. A real kick. The guitar/beetnick riifs by Marisa on "Christine".  Nino Ferrer's Kung-Fu fighting  "Mao et Moa".Petula Clark singing Downtown in French....Stella singing the BLUES in FRENCH!!!

There is TONS of this awesomeness out there.

Another resource is Mordi's  Blowupdoll blog. Where he is still active and exposing us to music since 2004.
