In 1938, at the age of 18, Richard Hayman, launched his career as a harmonica player. He began touring the country with the well-known harmonica group, the Borrah Minevitch Harmonica Rascals. Hired as a musician, he was soon writing all the music for this large ensemble. Then he went with Leo Diamond when Diamond left to form the Solidaires. Soon he began working as a composer and arranger for Hollywood film studios.

Richard Hayman’s work is in constant demand in every medium of musical expression from Boston to Hollywood. Though more involved with the symphony orchestra circuit, he has served as musical director and/or master of ceremonies for the tour shows of many popular entertainers: Bob Hope, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Olivia Newton-John, Mac Davis, Chet Atkins, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck, Red Skelton, Mike Douglas, Brenda Lee, The Carpenters, The Osmonds, Johnny Carson, Al Hirt, Eddie Arnold, Andy Williams, Jimmy Dean, Roy Clark, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Pat Boone, Andy Griffith, Rowan and Martin’s “Laugh-In”, Bobby Vinton and many others. “Richard Hayman and His Orchestra” have been presented on 23 albums and 27 hit singles by Mercury Records. Time Records has presented the Manhattan Pops Orchestra in 14 albums conducted and arranged by Richard Hayman. Various artists all over the world have recorded dozens of Hayman’s original compositions. He has also arranged and conducted recordings for more than 50 stars of the motion picture, stage, radio and television worlds.

PPS 2004 or 6004 Mike Simpson - Discussion In Percussion

Continuing with the series. Using the excellent reference” The Mercury Album Discography, Part 22: Perfect Presence Sound Series (PPM 2000/PPS 6000) 1960-1962) by By Brian Voss, David Edwards, Mike Callahan, Patrice Eyries, Randy Watts and Tim Neely Last update: January 19, 2012

This one was ripped by “The Macs”. From a clean LP found and sent to him YEARS ago...

Check the bio about Mike Simpson at The Space Age Pop page. What's not mentioned is his LP "Jungle Odyssey". A LP Jack Diamond used to promote on his site as a fantastic Exotica LP. Its OK, just music with animal calls, there's some undefined reason I'm not impressed. Jack just hyped it so people would buy his gold CDR of it... Picture below.

Björn Werkmann at Ambient Exotica has a long review of Jungle Odyssey. Fantastic review.

Back to Discussion in Percussion.. It really is just a bunch of musicians interacting with percussion...

01. Mike Simpson - Say Si Si Si

02. Mike Simpson - Too Marvelous For Words
03. Mike Simpson - Takes Two To Tango
04. Mike Simpson - Its A Pity To Say Goodbye
05. Mike Simpson - Three Little Words
06. Mike Simpson -  Cant We Talk It Over
07. Mike Simpson - Listen To The Mocking Bird
08. Mike Simpson - She Didnt Say Yes
09. Mike Simpson - Open Discussion
10. Mike Simpson - After I Say Im Sorry
11. Mike Simpson - What Is There To Say
12. Mike Simpson - Hawaiian War Chant

Splusp 1, Farm Animals

Splusp stands for Splogman's Undefined Sharity Project and I created it because in 2005 after the 52 weeks project I just couldn't stop. The website was accompanied by a mailing-list which was a sub-group of the Oddio Overplay-list (which had a big overlap with the exotica mailinglist, I believe), to serve the more obsessive compulsive posters. It technically still exists, but it has been dorment for years. In this group we used to exchange songs round a certain theme. Popular subjects were: Animals, Yodeling, Unusual covers (especially Beatles songs), etc..

This is the first of a series (I hope) of compilations of the splusp group theme exchanges. I can't recall who posted each song and neither in which order they were uploaded. I haven't made any changes to the format or the tags of the mp3s. I just grabbed them from a disc and compiled them for you.

1. Leslie Sarony and Jack Hyltons Band - Jollity Farm
2. Big Maybelle - Jinny Mule
3. Viv Stanshall - Jollity Farm
4. Delmore Brothers - Barnyard Boogie
5. Bonzo Dog Band - Jollity Farm
6. De Boegies - Meh
7. The Dizzy Man's Band - Op de boerderij
8. The Wurzels - Farmer Bill's Cowman
9. Johnnie Lee Wills - Milk Cow Blues
10. Papa Joe - The Cow Song
11. Lizard Alert - Old McDonald Had a Rocking Farm

Cugat worked in Anson Weeks' orchestra during the early 1930s before forming a new outfit of his own. He continued to lead his band throughout the 1930s and into the 1940s, spending a great deal of time at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. Cugat also had his own radio program. In the early 1930s he had a big hit with the song ''El Manicero'' (''The Peanut Vendor''), which started a rumba craze across America.

Cugat was a known womanizer. He was married five times, including to two of his vocalists, Abbe Lane and Charo. Other singers who worked for Cugat over the years include Lena Romay, La Chata, Don Reid, Del Campo, and Miguelito Valdes. Dinah Shore recorded a song with the group in 1940, and a young Desi Arnaz got his big break with the band. Actress Rita Hayworth also sang with the orchestra.

Cugat was often depicted in publicity photos holding a chihuahua and a pipe, even though he didn't smoke. He was never the one to miss out on a good business opportunity, however. He cashed in on this image and began selling his own line of pipes. He also started a chihuahua breeding business which featured documentation certifying that the dogs were Cugat dogs. Cugat never met a marketing deal he didn't like. Over the years he hawked a diverse line of products, including cigarette lighters and shirts, and also owned several Los Angeles-area restaurants. In addition Cugat was a talented caricaturist. His work appeared in newspapers, magazines and galleries around the world. During the 1920s he worked as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times newspaper while playing music at night.
