Slezikesque Mix Vol.1

WICN in central Massachusetts is a almost all music NPR station. Described as "Jazz+ for New England". "WICN brings you NPR News and jazz every work day, plus Soul, Bluegrass, Americana, Folk and Latin Jazz".

One program has been playing LP's for over 25 years, centering around swing and vocals. Starting around 1958 on commercial radio, this DJ still occasionally plays his original Jack Jones LP with "Thank Heaven for Little Girls". Something he did almost 50 years ago when his daughter was born.

This mix is just a cobbled selection. Some tracks here have been featured and oft repeated. You get the drift.

WICN is in good hands. Exotica Music fans will appreciate Howard Caplan on The Saturday Swing Session  from 8:00am to 12:00pm EST and Michelle Willson's Jazz N' Blue, 4-7pm EST Saturday's and The Blend Monday -Thursday 12-3PM EST.

PPS 2000 or 6000 David Carroll - Latin Percussion

Been an aspiration to upload the  whole series for you here on your web site.

Using this excellent reference" The Mercury Album Discography, Part 22: Perfect Presence Sound Series (PPM 2000/PPS 6000) 1960-1962) by By Brian Voss, David Edwards, Mike Callahan, Patrice Eyries, Randy Watts and Tim Neely Last update: January 19, 2012. So many people have created wonderful lists on the internet, groups from chat and message boards like our old Exotica Mailing List.  So we can find scans, articles and digitized RIPs of almost anything.

This first entry is my own rip from about 16 years ago. Gave up digitizing early. Was never happy with the sound quality and  could never figure out to make good scans.  This ~200Kbps rip sounds pretty good now, but then my hearing has taken a hit and know there are things missing when listening to old familiar works....

As I continue to slowly do this series the rips will be made from others. Want to thank them  in advance. there are new people coming up on the FaceBook group all the time and all this is new to somebody.  I'll always link up Brad's bio's on the Space Age Pop page. Brad was putting these together before there ever was a wiki.

So about the music. Jump ahead to "I Could Have Danced All Night" for a excellent Latin retread of a favorite. Before seeing what Carroll is doing on the real Latin tracks. Oh then there is  SABP verion of "Bijou" written by Mancini.

01. David Carroll - In A Little Spanish Town Cha Cha - Latin Percussion
02. David Carroll - The Breeze And I - Latin Percussion
03. David Carroll - Heartaches - Latin Percussion
04. David Carroll - Patricia - Latin Percussion
05. David Carroll - Sesame Mucho - Latin Percussion
06. David Carroll - Everythings Coming Up Roses - Latin Percussion
07. David Carroll - By Heck Cha Cha - Latin Percussion
08. David Carroll - Oy Negra - Latin Percussion
09. David Carroll - I Could Have Danced All Night - Latin Percussion
10. David Carroll - Bijou - Latin Percussion
11. David Carroll - The Lamp of Memory - Latin Percussion
12. David Carroll - Baia - Latin Percussion

 DL's will only last a ~ week.

Jazzabossamambocha! 18

Jazzabossamambocha! 18

The whole Jazzabossamabocha! series (20 mixes and counting on my mixcloud page mixcloud.com/marc-engels) started as a mixtape project that I recorded on CD’s for a local restaurant. The owner played these mixes for years and (I’m sure) not only when I was eating there. If you happen to be in Brussels, the restaurant is called Le Faubourg Saint Antoine. The food is not too bad, but the owner is a big collector of all things Tintin and he uses his restaurant to display his collection. It’s not that far from the Japanese Tower, the Chinese Pavillion and the Atomium if you want to see some of our more exotic architecture.

Certainly the early mixes were compiled with the idea of having something for everyone, nothing too disturbing and lots of classics. I gradually moved on to more unknown and more recent stuff, like you’ll discover on this number 18. Hope you like it. As I said, there’s more on my mixcloud page and I will upload some other Jazzabossamambocha’s soon. One more thing, the artwork on mixcloud is very different from this more recent design.

In Hi-Fi Live at the Kahiki

[audio mp3="http://exoticamusic.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/In-Hi-Fi-Live-at-the-Kahiki.mp3"][/audio]

Jack Fetterman has provided his DJ set from the Tiki News Bon Voyage Kahiki! party, August 26, 2000. this is the second edition 2009 , which differs in that it includes corrections and the bonus track, Acapulco 2000.

For more info and links about the Kahiki here's a post from the A Panda Tiki Blog . Weave your way into research from there.

Jack's HI-Fi mixes are always a combination of classic Exotica with the touch of the best new stuff you just need to know more about! So we get Perez Prado and Rosemany Clooney doing Bali Ha'i (tune I will never tire of) with De-Phazz , notice DJ Cam in the mix along with a remix Jack did of Les Baxter's Acapulco. Goodies.

After this revisit Cocktail Music For Robots.!

Who's Your Social Media Site?

Did something interesting, weird really.

Obtained a PayPal "business" debit card that is linked to the donate button on this site.

Every month $10 is automatically taken out by our hosting site. We have 8GB of space. And unlimited downloads. (We used to support the now defunct original mailing list.)

The business name is "Exotica Ring Music Club", the small sub-group that includes contributors and group administrators. A human must be connected to the money, unfortunately my name is still associated. So considering myself the first trustee or treasurer of this evolving a social media group that started in 1994. That now includes this website, Facebook page and the original mailing list.

Why? Has Facebook really destroyed the early promise of the internet?

This group/list has some interesting history. The Two Zombies Later compilation was created by list members. And many contributed information to the Space Age Pop Page. We lost some momentum without an active admin approving members for a few years. Or keeping up with technological developments with a central website. But we are back on track now.

A few years ago there was talk about another Two Zombies Later.  But has Facebook has really changed the social collaborative scene on the internet? Where it only takes one click to make a group. So there are a billion of them?  And a few seconds to post.

We shall see. The donate button is essentially a "go fund me" page for whatever ideas or projects members come up with. If anybody has the inclination.

Again, Why?

Many favorite blogs at www.blogger.com  have been shut down without notice over the years by Goggle, who owns Blogger. Google can do this without notice because it is a free service.  Our friend at Your Pal Doug's Pals had a thread on this. After a blogger is shut down the experience is so discouraging they don't bother to start up again. Think of all the lost work, typing, commenting. All it takes is one discouraging experience for a passion project to sour.

The TV episode Adam Ruins the Internet  remained us about how free services like Facebook and Google are not really free. Done to goofy effect around 20:30 or 26:00 on YouTube (also owned by Google.) But the conclusion is we pay for our free services with our very identify, that is profiled and sold. The early independent "Wild West" of the internet replaced by "The Matrix"?

"For every user they surveil, [FaceBook] makes only 12 dollars." So for every blogger using Google's free service. Instead why not spend about 12 dollars a year to be independent? It would only take about 13 bloggers to keep the bandwidth going year round. And we occasionally receive donations from mailing list and FaceBook members. If you only blog once a month that's only about $1 a month. And you have a built in audience. Between the 2 groups we have over 6000 members.

This site is funded for almost a year. Lets see what happens.

Metti Una Bossa in Italia

Followup on the Made in Italy post.  Homemade mixtape focusing more on the fabulous Italian bossa.  Astrud Gilberto is on here, but its her  LP she did in Italian.  Another mind blowing discovery for me. Italian Secret Service is well represented on YouTube and recommend finding out about them. If you don't know who Montefiori Cocktail or the amazing Nicola Conte is...well enjoy catching up. With YouTube and Pandora it's so easy now. All you have to do it type in an artist. And you are also finding about band mates on the Irma la Douce and 18th Street Lounge labels.

01.  Mina - La pioggia di Marzo (Aguas de Março)
02.  Mina - La pioggia di marzo
03.  Milva - Metti una sera a cena
04.  Sam Paglia - Continental 70
05.  Rosalia De Souza - Bossa 31
06.  Agnese Manganaro - Mille petali
07.  Enzo Jannacci - Pedro Pedreiro

Space Age Pop / Latin Style - Musica Fabuloso

A comp from a old blog named "A Taste of Vinyl".  How easy it is to discourage someone engaging in a volunteer passion project!  Despite all the encouraging comments this nice fellow dropped out 10 years ago after a few flame emails.

They say "no good dead goes unpunished". But reminded of what a famous teacher once said, really inappropriate to quote in the context of a goofy music blog.  "do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing"...a famous metaphor from a great man. And a subject worthy of much discussion in almost every aspect of our lives...but found an explanatory quote closer to my feelings....."don’t let what other people do discourage you from doing good, no mater how bad it effects you ..... stay good and don’t let [it] influence your mind and your Heart. .....And when something hurts you, don’t inflict pain back, but turn away from that anger."

You can also quote Taylor Swift "I shake it off, I shake it off"

Back to the music.

Here are the comments from this blogger whose earlier name will keep anonymous. How wonderful and enthusiastic he was putting these together. Like how took the time to also remove the gaps before and after the music so we have non-stop sound.

Well, I must say, "Back To The Future Of Music," previously posted, was some great music. The more I listened to it, the more the Latin songs kept jumping out at me.
So I said to myself, "Self, why not make an all Latin, Space Age Pop MiX?" So I did, because I am in charge and if I don't do it, who would?
