Arabica 4

Frits Jonker's fourth Arabica compilation. He mentions it on his blog april 18, 2013 where you can also find several versions of the artwork (included in the second zipfile).  A handfull of songs were included in other mixtapes by Frits. Three deliberately and four by accident. But sometimes a song belongs just where it belongs. Bongomania Volume 1

A vintage comp from an early blogger.  Xtabey put together three Bongomania comps when he was active. May have been a mate from down-under. His avatar, was Ryden's  image of the "little tiki drummer" in the fire maiden painting used on Ultra Lounge  Les Baxter compilation.  Still use his hi-res-scan as the desktop on my PC.

Nether-Arabica

In his own blogpost, december 3th, 2013 about it Frits Jonker writes this was a very difficult compilation to make: Dutch language songs about the Arabic world. They are hard to find and when you do they turn out to be silly and full of clichés both musically and lyrically. But I think that's what makes this mix so fun to listen to.

Zeitgeist

Tonight this mix was aired as VG158 at my local radio hour and it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a VG-show so there is definitely something odd about it. it It has an overall New Age or mystic 'feel'. But that's what you get when you ask visitor's of your blog: "give me a word and I'll make a splognerizer based on it" and somebody answers "zeitgeist" (someone else gave me "flange" which was even more of a challenge, but that's for later). Originally this was splognerizer 51.

You can find the mixcloudstream 320kps at the VG Website with a playlist complete with links and other goodies, or you can download it here (192 kbps). No seperated tracks this time, because I had to find matching titles on the internet. I made the mix and lost the downloaded bulk somewhere along the way.
I do have tracklist!

01 Schiller - der Anfang
02 Diary of Dreams - Element 1: Zeitgeist
03 Harold Budd + Zeitgeist - and then i alone am alone
04 Anthony Robbins - are you living a life of reaction?
05 Raudive - Zeitgeist
06 Kevin Brady Trio - Zeitgeist
07 Eldar - Zeitgeist
08 Faun - Zeitgeist
09 Harold Budd + Zeitgeist - breathless...
10 Bilder der Zeit
11 Hot Tracks - Octomnipent Zeitgeist I & II
12 Girlschool - Zeitgeist
13 Ende sneafliet - Session Zeitgeist
14 Charles Trenet - En ce temps là
15 Brian Bennett - Time Watch
16 Zeitgeist - Minimizer
17 Klaus Schulze - Zeit
18 The Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
19 Dark Age - Zeitgeist (Ghost in a Machine)
20 The Lost Children of Babylon - Beware the Zeitgeist
21 Harold Budd + Zeitgeist - nearly awakened
22 Schiller - Zeitgeist

Artwork was made for the occasion of tonight's broadcast by Ton de Ruijter.

Tropical Treasures

Another "classic exotica" compilation from SwankDaddy.

Enjoyed hearing the newer exotica groups like Waikiki., Tikiyaki Orchestra. And the wonderful Blue Hawaiians. The last track, a great reminder how cool "Honorable Hong Kong Rock"  is first heard by many of us on "Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 8: Cocktail Capers."

Some mean dream machines

In february 2008 I started experimenting with what was supposed to be something in between a mixtape and a radioshow. I first called it "splognewrasos" (Splogman's New Radio Somethings).
"The format is intended to last rather long: It's a musicshow (or collage/mix, etc...), about 60 to 70 minutes long. There won't be any spoken word (unless of course I absolutely have to...). Each episode there's no telling which styles of music will merge/collide. The source of the music can be anything: 78rpm, am-radio-recordings, mp3s, vinyl, cassettes, real to real and even CDs or DVDs. Sound quality is never quarenteed. And most of all: I have to enjoy making the shows."
From episode 6 I renamed them into splognerizers. I also started re-mixing, mashing up and adding musical instruments and sometimes even musical pieces of my own. Sometimes I had a kind of story in my head to which the splognerizer would be the soundtrack.
SNR7 is the first one I now think is suitable to be re-issued. It's also the first one that had something vagely resembling a playlist.

Batmania

I've already mentioned Frits Jonker, comic letterer from origin, but he does a lot more, part of which you can see on his website "Showcase". He also makes a lot of great music compilations. For today I just picked "Batmania" as a sequel to 5th avenue buses trip to Gotham city. Artwork by FJ himself of course. Turks Fruit (Turkish delight)

Tonight an slightly edited version of one of my most popular splognerizers from 2009 will be aired at the local radio in Zwolle, The Netherlands on my weekly show Vreemde Geluiden [= Stange Sounds].

In 2006-2007 this was a two hours show with a weekly exotica-item by Ton Rückert called "The Exoticaring CD of the week" and also a 'Weirdo Music Radio" corner by Marco kalnenek. The show lasted for one season and then continued with one or two podcasts a year on the website. In september 2013 a local DJ asked me to reboot the show as a weekly 15 minutes item in a local news program on tuesday night, which I did for a year after which programming changed and I got the one hour as it is now. Every week I pick a non-musical theme and try to find strange, unusual or just plain rare music around that with a touch of local recordings when possible. I've gradually minimized my presentation and refer to the extras on the website. The broadcasts are stored at mixcloud afterwards and embedded. Sometimes I ask an artist to do some designing. This time it's Frits Jonker, who asked me to send the seperate tracks, which I attached here for you, including some bonustracks.

01 Blaas of Glory – Prelude- The Final Countdown
02 The Don Ellis Orchestra – Turkish Bath
03 Björk Gu-mundsdóttir – Arabadrengurinn

Larry's Lounge Lizard Mix

Mix tape from saxophonist “Larry Sambosa”. Always nice to get a themed mix from an accomplished musician. Even just to peruse the tracklist, see what direction they go and surprises, like Donald Fagen.

“Strictly Ballroom" soundtrack (an excellent movie if you like bailroom dancing) and as far as I've ever heard, "Yakety Sax", clearly a novelty tune, was the only worthwhile thing Boots Randolph ever recorded If you ever find that swing album, let me know - the guy definitely has some chops, but seems to have decided to use [his] power for evil instead of good."

Doris Day’s “Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps” is the outstanding track on her “Latin For Lovers” LP. Pleasantly arranged and conducted by Mort Garson.  This was right before his Moog LP's.

doris

Boots Randolph. For some reason he comes up a lot when crate digging in central Massachusetts. Maybe because he’s left last in the bin?  Guess there is a good swing record out there by Boots, thru hunting for gems. My bin is full.

Every time I even think about Boots Larry's “used his power for evil instead of good” quote pops in my head. And now it will happen to you.

A few demo tracks from "Sambossa" is the group Larry was in at the time.

Tracklist

  1. Fly Me to the Moon - Julie London

  2. Days of Wine and Roses - Tony Bennett & Bill Evans

  3. Chega De Saudade - Sambossa

5th Avenue Buses - Trip To Gotham City

Hello [Exotica members]

I'm wondering if you would be interested in an LP rip I'd like to donate to the website? It's a reasonably rare record and I've recently made a very good sounding rip. I was a member of the original exotica mailing list, and more recently followed Basic Hip's awesome year of free albums. And I'd like to give something to the community.

The rip I'd like to toss into the ring is "A Trip To Gotham City" by the fake band "The 5th Avenue Buses" which was really songs written by Billy Page, arranged by Gene Page and produced by Jackie Mills. And it's also a great little heard exploitation record. If you're interested I can set up a Dropbox.

Best wishes,

Larry

Herb Bernstein's New Crusade

From the back of the bins right to your Download folder.

Virgil on the Facebook group " Never heard of this guy before... picked this one up on a whim, and the karma that a really nice older couple that I love to visit and converse with had it in a stack of records at their booth (got to keep the junker economy circles greased). I think I'm gonna love it."

Go back about 16 years ago this LP was talked about more than a few times by Johnny Yuma on the original Exotica list. Found his original post at the Exotica Archives:

Author: jonathan richardson
Date:  [?]
To: exotica
Subject: [Exotica] Herb Bernstein??

Ok, who out there knows who Herb Bernstein is? I just picked up this record  at a thrift store today called Herb Bernstein's New Crusade and its a dream  come true. Imagine Brass Ring, only more go go and with wordless "na na na"  "pa pa pa" womans vocals with drum breaks galore. Im not joking, the perfect  now sound record does exist. Step aside Phil Bodner and Incredible Bongo  Band."

We traded mp3 rips and got a copy, no artwork scans.  Never saw it until Virgil posted it.

From the linear notes: "We settled on the tuba and bass trombone combination as our lead, then added 3 flamenco guitars, 4 drummers took us out of 'Latin' toward a funky R & B. We used a single bass, at times fender, other times string. On top of it all we placed 3 piccolos and weave a soprano voice through it all for color."

So enclosed a collaboration between 2 crate diggers 16 years apart: Johnny  Yuma's rip and Virgil's photo.
