Joe' Slezik's Saturday Jazz Matinee on WICN.
Joe is on Saturday's from Noon to 4. WICN has a few programs backed up at http://www.wicn.org/podcasts. So you can catch a sample.
Been listening to Joe Slezik's program at WICN for about 20 years. And still at a loss to describe this unique blend of Jazz.
Yesterday Howard Kaplan and Al Dean filled in for Joe on the Fall drive. And reflected on how much of a living legend he is at the station. They were playing selections from Joe's record collection because his core collection is now at the station! What a kindness as it was hard for Joe, who is in his 80's, to lug the records into the studio.
Been helping out with the pledge drives since I found out about the WICN. And when Joe moved to Saturday's I usually volunteered to do the phones on his program. And catch a glimpse of his records. So I had an idea of what to find at the flea markets. So yesterday got a chance to flip thru the collection of rare finds. Bobby Scott's, Stan Kenton's, Command Records. No pristine collection. All dogged eared and played regularly for decades. But still a treasure trove, some of these hardly exist anymore.
Found his copy of "Ted Steele Presents Miss Teal Joy" on Bethlehem Records. Just to focus on one LP. Joe played her once and I called into the station bug nuts to find out who she was. And maybe others did too. Because Joe played her often. You can find all these tracks on YouTube. she sounded cool and Exotic, an Asian Billie Holiday. But if you never heard Teal Joy on great programs like the Saturday Jazz Matinee how else would you discover her?
We need stations like WICN and the hard working volunteer DJ's who are presenting these musical gems. This world is so over saturated with media. Everything is at our fingertips to watch or listen too. But there is so much. How do we find something cool and new (to us) to love and listen too? That's why we need, and appreciate our dedicated DJ's like Howard Kaplan, Joe Slezik, Michelle Wilson and Norm Rosen.

words and music Vera van der Poel (c)2017
This is the house where i live
Where we once were born
Safe from storms
Bricks build solid and proof
Supporting the roof
You would love it, do you?
In the house where i’ve lived
For so many years
The walls have ears
Bricks drenched in shedded tears
Sweet innocent years
Won’t you come back over here
A rocking chair on the porch
A playground full of toys
The stained glass window colours my part
An old car’s backseat used as a bench in the yard
If the walls could ever speak
The house would tumble down, way down
In the house where I live
A family’s dazed
Smacked in the face
One seat is unoccupied
Still set every night
Someone’s missing and died
Outside the house where i’ve lived
The walls couldn’t see
What was happening to me
Bricks cracked and slowly neglect
The soul of the wrecked
They just couldn’t protect me
An early evening breeze
The oaktree left some leaves
The kitchenfloor so shiny and waxed
The curtains flirting but the cat’s nails leaving her tracks
If the walls could ever speak
The house would tumble down, way down
